New Branch Toolkit

This toolkit will walk you through the steps to set up and run a local institutional/regional branch of the Climate Justice Universities Union. The basic principle of a branch is to support the branch members to identify and run campaigns of their choosing. Where possible, branches should identify SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time bounded) actions and open such actions to collaboration with branches across the Union. 

Step 1: Identify local institutional/regional members - to get a list of the current institution members, send a request to Climatejusticeuni@proton.me. There may be additional members that are not registered with the Union using their institutional email and therefore it is advisable to post a notification of the new Branch in the CJUU Newsletter by emailing Climatejusticeuni@proton.me with a brief description, inviting members at your institution to contact you.

Step 2: Email Branch invitation to local members (example in Appendix 1).  Where there are large numbers of possible local members it is more efficient to select a specific date and time to meet at least 4 weeks in advance.  Where there are smaller numbers the data and time can be negotiated.

Step 3: Hold meeting

-   Agree Branch structure and roles

-   Agree prioritised list of concerns/actions, accessing any collaborative resources available on the CJUU Website

-   Identify potential collaborations and internal CJUU resources

-   Agree resource requirements and Actions to be taken

-   Agree meeting schedule

Step 4: Undertake Actions

Step 5: Keep CJUU Coordinating Group informed of actions by emailing Climatejusticeuni@proton.me to help identify synergies.

Each Branch can establish its own structures and roles - examples can be seen in Appendix 2.

Communications 

There are no prescribed mechanisms for managing local branch communications, Branches can agree their own preferred method, such as direct emails,  listserv, slack etc.  The CJUU can provide individual branches with their own Branch Newsletter.  To arrange this please email Climatejusticeuni@proton.me to discuss.
